Back to school shopping hacks for when school starts
Back to school shopping hacks for when school starts
You don't have to spend a small fortune to get your kids kitted out for school this year—I'm sure even Prince George will re-use his stationary year on year. I’m going to share with you my favourite back to school hacks.
Reuse and Recycle
There’s probably things you can save from last year's set. School backpacks and lunchboxes may just need a good wash, and there are probably folders, pens, and pencils that can be put back into good use. I've even been able to pull unused pages out of lined notebooks to be used as loose-leaf paper the following year. (Save the trees!)
Invest in things that will last
Sometimes, you really do get what you paid for, when I was at school I had a Kipling bag which lasted my all the way to the end of education, which I re-vamped with my favourite characters; using stickers, patches or keyrings. While I’m on accessories back packs, be sure to safeguard it from loss with a tracking tile or getting a HomingPIN Tag for your bag, its worth it in the long run.
Shop Online for Back-to-School Clothes
Not only do you avoid those "mum! I really want this" spur of the moment purchases, but with our handy and easy to use browser extension - Streetify, you can save a fortune with coupon codes and cashback.
Focus Your Time and Effort on Big-Ticket Items
Running to five different stores to save 50 cents on notebooks or crayons isn't a good use of your time or energy. Using an online deal aggregator like Streetify which focuses on saving cash on bigger-ticket supplies (lunch boxes, calculators, computers, and clothing) to get a bigger savings and bang for your buck.
Skip the Disposables
Plastic pouches for school lunches are only cheap to start—but you have to keep replenishing them. (And don't forget what all those one time use plastics do to the environment!) Opt for reusable lunch containers for sandwiches and snacks to help save the planet (and your purse).
Get creative and arts and crafts
You'll pay more for the branded and Disney esc school supplies. I like to get plain white folders or simple folders, and let my children get creative with making collages to dress them up. Also gives you an activity for the holidays to do with the kids.
Save on Extracurricular Equipment
Those extracurricular costs can really add up especially if it’s a sports item that they will grow out of like a hockey stick. I try to look for used / second-hand equipment and music instruments on places like Facebook Marketplace, Play It Again Sports, eBay, or Craigslist. Chances are you'll find some very gently used items for a fraction of the cost. You can also sell on items that are not longer the right size or your kids have given up on.
